PHGG Sunfiber®, a partially hydrolyzed fiber from the Indian guar bean, is an all-natural, highly soluble fiber of exceptional purity that is characterized by excellent tolerability . This fiber passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract, stimulating the growth of beneficial prebiotic bacteria in the large intestine , which promotes healthy microflora and supports regular intestinal peristalsis without causing discomfort.
Mannanoligosaccharides obtained from the cell walls of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae act as a valuable support for the natural defense mechanisms found in the digestive system. These compounds effectively support the balance of intestinal microbiota, helping to maintain proper intestinal function and stimulating the immune system to better respond to external factors.
Western Larch Bark Extract DER 90:1, standardized to 90% arabinogalactan, is a rich source of a soluble polysaccharide fraction with potent prebiotic and immunomodulatory effects. Arabinogalactan is effectively fermented by intestinal microflora, supporting the production of short-chain fatty acids and actively stimulating the body’s natural defenses.
Learn the differences between prebiotics and probiotics.
Probiotic
Probiotics are living microbial cells (primarily lactic acid bacteria of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium ) that exhibit specific biochemical characteristics that enable them to survive the harsh conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. A key element of their metabolism is the homo- or heterofermentative fermentation of carbohydrates , which converts glucose into lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
This process drastically lowers the pH in the intestinal lumen, creating an unfavorable, acidic environment that inhibits the proliferation of pathogenic putrefactive bacteria. Furthermore, the biochemical activity of probiotics includes the production of specific enzymes (such as beta-galactosidase) and the synthesis of antibacterial substances, such as bacteriocins and hydrogen peroxide , which selectively destroy the cell membranes of pathogenic microorganisms.
Prebiotic
Prebiotics are organic compounds of oligosaccharide and polysaccharide nature (such as PHGG fiber, MOS mannanoligosaccharides, or arabinogalactan) that are not digested by human endogenous enzymes (e.g., salivary amylase or small intestinal brush border enzymes). Due to their specific glycosidic bonds (often beta-type), the human digestive system lacks the enzymes capable of hydrolyzing them, allowing these molecules to reach the large intestine intact.
In the large intestine, prebiotics undergo bacterial anaerobic (anaerobic) fermentation by endogenous microflora. This pathway leads to the breakdown of complex sugar chains into simpler monomers and the subsequent synthesis of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid. Butyric acid, in particular, plays a key biochemical role, serving as the primary energy source (nutrient substrate) for colonocytes (intestinal epithelial cells), stimulating their proliferation, sealing the intestinal barrier, and modulating the local immune response.
Traditional fiber supplements, such as Pure Vital Fiber, wheat bran, or ground flaxseed, often cause severe bloating, gas, and crampy abdominal pain in people with sensitive digestive tracts. This is due to the rapid, violent bacterial fermentation they undergo in the large intestine, which causes a sudden buildup of gas and distension of the intestinal walls.
PHGG (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum) used in Prebiotic Complex undergoes a controlled enzymatic hydrolysis process, which shortens its molecules and changes the fermentation kinetics. This allows PHGG to ferment slowly, steadily, and evenly throughout the entire large intestine. Intestinal bacteria metabolize it gradually, preventing sudden gas release. Furthermore, thanks to its high solubility and excellent body tolerance, this fiber effectively supports peristalsis and regulates bowel movements (both in cases of constipation and unstable bowel rhythm), without causing irritation to the intestinal lining or digestive discomfort.
Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) are specific polysaccharides that compose the outer cell wall of yeast and act as advanced modulators of the intestinal environment. From a biochemical perspective, their key role is to competitively bind pathogens . Many pathogenic bacteria (possessing lectins, or adhesion proteins, on their surface) strive to anchor themselves to the intestinal epithelium, which is the first step towards infection and disruption of the microbiome.
The structure of MOS mimics intestinal epithelial receptors, allowing harmful microorganisms to readily “stick” to MOS molecules rather than to the intestinal walls. The resulting complex is then safely eliminated from the body along with fecal masses through peristalsis. This mechanism not only protects the intestinal barrier from colonization by pathogens but also relieves the local immune system (GALT – gut-associated lymphoid tissue) and stimulates the growth of beneficial saprophytic bacteria, which gain space to dominate the intestinal ecosystem.
Arabinogalactan obtained from the bark of the western larch (in the Prebiotic Complex at a dose based on the DER 90:1 extract standardized to 90% of this compound) is a powerful polysaccharide with unique prebiotic and immunomodulatory properties.
A high degree of standardization guarantees that we deliver a precisely defined, highly concentrated dose of the active substance to the body.
Metabolically, arabinogalactan is distinguished by the extremely high rate and efficiency of fermentation by beneficial intestinal bacteria (particularly Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains). This fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate, and butyric acid (butyrate), which is crucial for intestinal health. Butyric acid provides the sole, primary energy fuel for colonocytes (the cells that make up the epithelium of the large intestine), stimulating their regeneration, proliferation, and the sealing of tight junctions . Furthermore, arabinogalactan exhibits strong immunomodulatory effects: it stimulates the production of NK (Natural Killer) cells and macrophages, which directly translates into improved overall systemic immunity.
Although each of the ingredients—PHGG fiber, mannanoligosaccharides (MOS), and larch bark arabinogalactan—acts on microbiota in slightly different ways, their combination in a single formula creates a synergistic effect. Their different chemical structures and fermentation kinetics contribute to a more balanced feeding of beneficial bacteria.
While PHGG fiber ensures slow and stable fermentation throughout the entire large intestine without the risk of bloating, arabinogalactan works extremely dynamically, stimulating the rapid growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains and abundant butyric acid production. In turn, mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) not only support microbiota but above all cleanse the intestinal environment, neutralizing pathogens. This allows beneficial bacteria, provided with the ideal “fuel” from PHGG and arabinogalactan, and the purified environment provided by MOS, to effectively dominate the intestinal ecosystem, yielding significantly better results than using either ingredient alone.
