Magtein® - discover the unique benefits of Magnesium L-Threonate

Magtein® (magnesium L-threonate) supplementation increases magnesium levels in the brain, which supports improvements in learning ability, working memory, and short- and long-term memory.

Clinical research has shown that 12 weeks of Magtein® supplementation can enhance synaptic density and improve cognitive function in older adults. This effect is linked to improved synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus – a key area for learning and memory processes.

Liu G, Weinger JG, Lu ZL, Xue F, Sadeghpour S. “Efficacy and Safety of MMFS-01, a Synapse Density Enhancer, for Treating Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.” J Alzheimer’s Dis. 2016;49:971-990.

Yes, Magtein® has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety.

A clinical study by Hewlings & Kalman (2022) in adults aged 50-70 demonstrated that 12 weeks of supplementation significantly lowered anxiety and stress levels on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) compared to placebo.

The effect is linked to magnesium’s influence on neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, as well as its role in regulating the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) – the body’s main stress-response system.

  • In stressful situations, the hypothalamus releases CRH, which stimulates the pituitary to produce ACTH, triggering the adrenal glands to release cortisol (the stress hormone).

  • While cortisol helps the body cope short-term, chronic stress can overload and dysregulate the HPA axis, leading to fatigue, sleep disturbances, lowered immunity, and mood disorders.

  • Magnesium deficiency may contribute to excessive HPA axis activation, amplifying stress responses.

Research shows that Magtein® supplementation improves sleep quality and daytime functioning.

In a study by Hausenblas et al. (2024), participants taking Magtein® experienced better sleep quality, fewer nighttime awakenings, and greater daytime recovery.

The mechanism is linked to neurotransmitter modulation:

  • Magnesium helps reduce excessive activation of NMDA (glutamate) receptors, lowering neural excitability.

  • At the same time, it supports GABA activity, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter responsible for calmness, relaxation, and falling asleep.

Studies have shown that Magtein® benefits cognitive function across different age groups.

In a study by Zhang et al. (2022) involving 109 healthy adults, supplementation led to improved memory and faster information processing. While positive effects were observed in all participants, the greatest benefits appeared in older adults.

This may be due to the natural decline of brain magnesium levels with age, making older individuals more responsive to supplementation. At the same time, early use of magnesium supplementation may act preventively, helping maintain optimal magnesium levels in the brain and slowing age-related cognitive decline.
