Vitamin A, an essential fat-soluble vitamin

Vitamin A plays a key role in maintaining proper immune system function, as it influences the differentiation and maturation of epithelial cells and lymphocytes. Retinoids (the active forms of vitamin A, including retinoic acid) regulate the expression of genes responsible for the synthesis of proteins involved in immune responses.

They help maintain the integrity of the mucosal membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems, which serve as the body’s first line of defense against microorganisms. In addition, vitamin A supports antibody production and the activity of NK (natural killer) cells, thereby strengthening the body’s ability to combat infections.

Vitamin A is involved in regulating the expression of genes that participate in iron metabolism, supporting its proper utilization and transport in the body. A deficiency of vitamin A may impair the mobilization of iron from liver stores and its delivery to erythropoiesis (red blood cell production).

Regarding skin health, vitamin A controls the differentiation of keratinocytes, the epidermal cells responsible for structure and protection. It also supports skin regeneration, helps maintain elasticity, and promotes adequate hydration by regulating sebum production and epithelial cell proliferation.

Vitamin A is essential for the function of rhodopsin, a protein located in the rod cells of the retina that enables vision in low light. The aldehyde form of vitamin A (retinal) binds with opsin to form a light-sensitive complex, allowing the conversion of light stimuli into nerve impulses transmitted to the brain.
